National Velvet
King Arthur Carrousel - National Velvet: Named for Enid Bagnold's classic novel, National Velvet's elegant trappings are painted purple, lavender, green and gold. An English-style saddle sits atop a scrolled gold and purple blanket, into which a stippled texture has been carved.
Enid Bagnold's National Velvet was first published in 1935. The story is about a 14 year-old girl named Velvet and her piebald stallion named, The Pie. The unlikely duo goes on to win Great Britain's Grand National, a prestigious steeplechase. In 1944, Elizabeth Taylor, Mickey Rooney and Angela Lansbury starred in the acclaimed film adaptation of Bagnold's novel.
